Program Description:
Martinique, a French and Creole-speaking island in the Caribbean, provides an amazing setting for improving your French and learning about the culture and history of the island.

This mini-term, designed for French majors, minors and students who have already participated in the Rennes program, is scheduled for a three-week period during the Winter break, normally every other year.

Course of Study

Students will examine how colonial and post-colonial subjects are represented through literature, theater and music.

Highlights of the program include:
  • Participation in a wide range of seminars in literature (including two given by acclaimed and world-renowned Martinican author Raphaël Confiant), social geography, history and economics and language classes (including an introduction to Creole)
  • Travel on three major excursions, one to the north of the island, one to the south and a jeep tour
  • Tour of Fort-de-France, a visit to the Archeological Museum of Martinique and a visit to the Conseil Régional de Martinique
  • Participate in a dance workshop, a performance by the Ballets Folkloriques and a "Contes créoles" storytelling evening
  • Independent projects, in French, in which students incorporate seminar notes, excursion lectures and individual interviews with the people of Martinique, supplemented with photos  and extensive commentary


Successful completion of Studies in the French Caribbean (FRN 304) in the fall term with the professor who will be leading the mini-term.  Although not required, priority for the mini-term is given to French majors, minors and students who have already participated in the Rennes program.


Students will reside with host families during their stay in Martinique.
