This mini-term focuses on social movements, including human rights, workplace democracy, gender equality, environmental protections, and more. Students will spend two weeks in Buenos Aires and one week traveling in Patagonia to Los Glaciares National Park, home of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Classroom study will be supplemented by tours and meetings with political, human rights, gender, social justice, and environmental activists.
One of the most politically exciting countries in the world today, Argentina is alive with opportunities to study history, politics and culture. Buenos Aires is the home of a famous human rights’ campaign, “The Mothers (Madres) of the Plaza de Mayo,” as well as other social movements building democracy in the years since the end of a brutal military dictatorship (1976-83). A huge cosmopolitan city, Buenos Aires is a well-known center of the arts, dance (especially tango), film, music and sports. Patagonia offers a breathtaking landscape of glaciers, mountain ranges, lakes, rare plants and animals. This spectacular country is likewise suffering the devastating effects of global warming, natural gas exploration, and mining, which has given rise to environmental struggles.

Study is divided between formal classroom presentations and tours of factories, schools, communities, human rights’ offices, and centers of social movements. Approximately half the day will be in the classroom and half visiting locales where activists are engaged in movements for social and economic justice. During the last week, students will fly to El Calafate near the tip of the Southern Hemisphere where they will meet with both specialists in environmental study and activists in the ecology movement.
Students will meet in weekly preparatory classes during the Fall term. While in Argentina students will research and write a paper on a specific topic pertaining to the social movements, as well as keep a daily journal in preparation for a poster or video presentation scheduled early in the Winter term.
A course in LACS, GSWS or ENS. Spanish is recommended.
Students will reside with host families in apartments during their stay in Buenos Aires. The city has an excellent public transportation system and students should be willing to experience life in a very large city. In Patagonia, students will reside in hostels and modest hotels with shared dormitories and bathrooms.
